Bitcoin's Hard Fork Problem: Can we PoS-sibly Change the Code?
GM Guys and Gals,
Greetings, fellow humans and robots alike! Today we’re going to talk about the “Skull of Satoshi” and how it caused quite a stir in the Bitcoin community.
For those of you who don’t know, the “Skull of Satoshi” is an art installation created by Canadian artist Benjamin Von Wong that aims to highlight the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining.
Von Wong initially believed that proof-of-work (PoW) was an outdated and wasteful technology, but after some intense discussions with the Bitcoin community, he has come to see the error of his ways.
In response to the backlash he received, Von Wong took to Twitter to clarify that the installation wasn’t meant to be anti-Bitcoin. He now understands that PoW is an integral part of Bitcoin’s identity and value proposition, and he’s taking some time to reflect on how he can help the environment without undermining Bitcoin’s core principles.
But what about Greenpeace and its “Change the Code, Not the Climate” campaign? Well, they’re still pushing for a more environmentally friendly consensus mechanism, but they’re not necessarily suggesting that Bitcoin should switch to proof-of-stake (PoS) specifically.
They just want to see some innovation and creativity in this space, which is honestly not too much to ask.
Unfortunately, some people are less optimistic about the possibility of transitioning Bitcoin to PoS. According to Viacheslav Zhygulin, a co-founder and CTO of a liquid staking protocol, a hard fork would be required, and that’s just not realistic given the current state of the Bitcoin network.
I made the Skull believing that Bitcoin Mining was a simple black-and-white issue. I’ve spent my entire career trying to reduce real-world physical waste, and PoW felt intuitively wasteful.
Of course, I was wrong.
Few things in the world are black and white. Dumb me. /4

Phil Harvey, the CEO of a Bitcoin mining consulting firm, agrees that introducing PoS to the Bitcoin network would be a bad idea. He argues that PoW is essential to Bitcoin’s identity and value proposition, and switching to PoS would fundamentally change what Bitcoin is all about.
So, what have we learned today, folks? We’ve learned that Bitcoin and the environment are not necessarily enemies, but they’re not exactly best friends either. We’ve also learned that sometimes it’s better to listen to what the experts have to say, even if it means admitting that you were wrong.
And most importantly, we’ve learned that even in the world of cryptocurrency, there’s always room for a little humour and wit.
As the crypto world continues to evolve, we will keep you updated on all the latest developments. Stay tuned for more updates from Web3shala.
